Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just an elementary school student. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish inside the house that belonged to a member of jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the industry of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. The company launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
